The Annual Columbus Day Precipitational Event

Sunday morning, October 9th, San Antonio, Texas.

It’s raining outside, and I’ll tell you how I know.

It has nothing to do with the fact that the skies are that gloomy shade of gray.  Set aside the fact that Zeus-like claps of thunder jolted me out of various states of sleep apnea in the middle of the night last night.

You can forget about the fact that the pit bull won’t go outside to “kick a bush”, or even the fact that I intervened in the compound-wide pacing of the TharpSter TreadMill long enough to jam two alprazolam down her throat in an effort to get her to just chill.

Nope.

The reason I know it’s raining is because it’s Columbus Day Weekend.

Spooky, huh?

Now when I first ventured into writing this piece an hour ago, I had lofty hopes and dreams to discuss an affliction the family and I had from 1999 through 2003 where we would pack up and go camping every Columbus Day weekend.

Fortunately for you, I got bored with it before I could subject you as my beloved reader to such dribble.

I’ll dispense with the details and get right to the crux of the story.  It rained, every single time we went.

In 2003, our trip to Choke Canyon State Park yielded such a nasty storm that we decided to discontinue additional camping trips for at least a few years.  We’ve yet to go back there, or any of the other campgrounds we visited in that time period.

As it rains right now here at the end of 2011, I’m left with a continuing reminder that camping here in draught stricken Texas on Columbus Day Weekend is an ill-advised premise.

With that being said, I’ll now share with you my latest foray into Youtubery.
