Ride Sally Ride

The spring of 1985 came upon us like any other spring in the middle of the 80’s.

I was a junior in high school and was entering into the final months of my very first job working at The Taco Place in the mall.

By the time school would end for the year, I would get the opportunity to take on a better job delivering processed film to various grocery stores, drug stores, mass merchandisers, and photo booths all over town.

I had recently procured a 5 year old Mustang.

It was bitchin’ hatchback.

It was a gun metal gray with a red pin stripe.

Over the next few years that I had that car, I spent plenty of time and Mom’s money enhancing the aesthetic quality of the automobile.

I tinted the windows and put a bra and louvers on it.  A sunroof went in too.  I had a stereo installed along with speakers to vibrate all of the feel good noise which emanated from the Top 40 radio stations of the time.

When the volume was up, everyone could Wang Chung on any night they wanted to.

I also had seat covers.

Cool ones.

They were black with silver piping.  The Mustang logo adorned the middle just below the neck.  They had a pocket in the back which was perfect  for stashing Chilton manuals, dirty magazines, and weed.

Granted, some of the stitching came undone whenever I installed them the first time, but otherwise, they were in pretty good shape.

They still are too, and represent the last remaining physical memory of that beloved car.

I found them stored in the garage today, and ran them through the wash.

They’re for sale now, and I would guess that any Mustang made between 1979 and 1993 (sans signature door groove) which sported bucket seats would accommodate these bad boys.

No guarantees though.

Other production years remain untested by the author at this time.

I’ve got two of them and will let them go for $15 a piece, or $35 for the pair.
