All This For Chicken

I’ve never been a fan.  If you read my blog on a regular basis, you know why.  If not, stay tuned.

I’ve always known they were a family oriented business which espouses traditional Christian values.  I’ve known this because they close on Sundays.

There used to be a time in America when you had to look high and low for a place to get anything on a Sunday.  Somewhere in the 80’s, more and more businesses started opening their doors on Sundays.

I can only think of three places here in San Antonio which close on Sunday.  There may be more, but here on my own island, there are only three, and Chick-Fil-A is one of them.

So when the Chick in Chief made comments about his personal beliefs in support of traditional marriage recently, the entire bidness drew the rebuke of various mayors and other elected officials.  They threatened discriminatory practices for setting up shop in their towns, and other tactics like trying to get them evicted from college campuses.

Today, the crowds are lined up out the door at Chick-Fil-A’s nationwide in support of the restaurant chain.  I’m sure there are many reasons why this is happening.  I won’t even try to guess what the primary reason is.  I’ll let the media outlets do that in the foolish manner they’ve got down to a science.

Aside from the primary reason why I don’t patronize them, I’ll give the primary reason I would.

It’s all based on our freedom of speech.  This is still America, and regardless of the efforts of those who would endeavor to censor or even censure our right to express our thoughts and feelings about various matters, we have the right to come out and say it.  It doesn’t matter if the expression is popular, unpopular, politically correct, politically incorrect, misogynistic, racist, bigoted, generally blunt, excessively sensitive, ill timed, ill conceived, or generally stupid.

Furthermore, if the person who utters whatever statement they have the right to utter should happen to market a certain product or service, it’s not really up to the government or other elected officials to offer up a punishment upon the business of the aforementioned utterer.

Not only is it not up to said government or government officials to act, it’s just not their right to do so.

Leave it to market forces to determine the fate of the business at hand.

We’ve seen this many times before in the past.  Keith Olbermann lamented that the parents of A.B. Stoddard should have considered abortion.  Don Imus referred to the Rutgers ladies basketball team as a bunch of “nappy headed hoes”.  Ed Schulz called Laura Ingrahm a “right wing slut” on his radio show.  Speaking of sluts, Rush Limbaugh used the same reference about Sandra Fluke when she demanded government funded birth control.  Bill Maher has made multitudes of misogynistic remarks about conservative woman.  Michael Richards let loose with the N word during a stand up comedy routine.  Mel Gibson went the anti-Semitic route during a traffic stop and subsequent arrest.  Dan Cathy, president of Chick-Fil-A stated that he was supportive of the “biblical definition of the family unit” and that supporters of gay marriage were “arrogant”.

In each of those cases, it was ultimately the market which decided the response.  Some survived, others didn’t.  Regardless, government intervention wasn’t called for.

Anymore, those who hold politically correct opinions,  views, and beliefs will do just about anything within their power to render the opinions, views, and beliefs of the politically incorrect to be nothing but a mute point.  Malaprop intended.

It’s quite ironic that the most tolerant among us maintain such an intolerant stance on issues when differences are present.

Speaking of intolerance, allow me to rekindle the fires of the reasoning behind not supporting the newest bastion of the free speech rights in this great country of ours.

Ladies and gentlemen, there is not reason on God’s green Earth why I should ever have to enter an establishment, order a chicken sandwich, and request no pickle.

To have to do so is pure heresy.

Absolutely Bob. Any other motive behind this mess is a complete mystery to me.
